I’ve always been a big fan of nootropics and smart drugs. You will have seen me talk really regularly about really easy to use, cool things like 5HTP, phenibut and aniracetam. L-Dopa is another one of these cool things.
L-Dopa boosts the amount of dopamine and serotonin in your body which makes you feel good. Even better is L-Dopa’s effect on sleep, performance and your hormone profile. In this article I’ll discuss how it helps and how much you should take, referencing studies along the way.
Ok so this part really isn’t gains related, but who doesn’t want to know about a chemical which makes you have better sex? L-Dopa has the ability to increase the body’s output of gonadotropins, Luteinising Hormone and Follicle Stimulating Hormone, which in turn increases your sex drive. Men who were given 5g per day of Macuna Pruriens, an L-Dopa precursor had significantly higher sperm levels in one study, while in another they received 2g per day for 2 weeks were noted to have significantly higher desire for sex.
I’ve long used dopamine boosters to improve performance so its comforting to know that the science has now caught up with practice. Taking a dose of Tyrosine at 150mg/kg of bodyweight was shown to increase cyclists performance by 16% in one study while in another it showed that cognitive function was significantly increased while training in stressful conditions. For those of you who are pushing the limits of training, I’m sure you know how valuable an increase in endurance and cognitive function can be.
This one is pretty interesting. A you all are well aware growth hormone is awesome for improving recovery, sleep, fat loss and amino acid retention/muscle gain. In one study taking 1g of L-Dopa orally increased growth hormone levels after 30-90 minutes. While the level of increase aren’t anywhere near the pharmacological levels of those listed experienced with the administration of injected human growth hormone, it’s still enough to get you to take it.
What I recommend
I love dopamine boosters. They keep you functioning well in the bed, head and gym. What more could you ask for?
What I recommend you do to boost your dopamine is take Tyrosine daily and evaluate Macuna Pruriens for yourself. Take 5g of Tyrosine in the morning then 5g again pre-workout with some PEA (phenylethylamine). I’ve used Macuna Pruriens mostly for sleep and have found it to be quite good at a dose of 1000mg, however some guys notice that it gives them surreal dreams, constant waking through the night and sluggishness. I recommend trying a dose of 500mg before bed, evaluating it for yourself then decide whether to increase or decrease the dose.
